A rare war-date Santa Cruz, California letter, 3pp. 4to., written by George C. Stevens, [n. p., n. d., but Santa Cruz, Cal., early 1862], reading, in part: "I will tell you what is going on out here. California is loyal as you will see by the vote she gave this fall. We elected our governor with twenty thousand majority…and two members of Congress…have got a majority…Santa Cruz is the Banner[?] County [Maine] of the state. We pole 1500 votes…1000 Republican, 260 Union Democrat, 240 Secesh. So you see that we beet them…1856 there was not over 50 Republican votes in this county…we have for governor 55,000 votes…six years ago if a Republican undertook to speak publicly they would rotten egg him, but now the chives, God damn them, dare not open their mouths. We are not afraid to howl…this state is raising six and half regiments for the war. Their will be five regiments of infantry and a Regiment and half of Cavalry. They are nearly full. Santa Cruz raised one Comp. of cavalry, 80 men and is now raising a Comp. of infantry. Ruell Kittridge [private, 2nd California Cavalry, 1861-1862] and Gaylord Mead [sergeant, 2nd California Cavalry, 1861-1864] have both gone in the cavalry…I expect the old Doctor will go as Sergeant in one of the Regiments. He has gone to San Francisco now to see about it. I am think very strong of going in the infantry company that is raising here. Work has been very dull here this summer in Santa Cruz but in San Francisco their was so much building as their is this summer. I should like to be in Washington now to see the soldiers. It must be exciting times…I don't want to see or hear of any more Bull Run fits…Geo. C. Stevens." Possibly a partial letter, but with great content that stands on its own. Minor soiling, else VG.
