War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Julius P. Varney, Co. K, 42nd Mass. Vols., New Orleans, [La.], Jan. 1, [1863], to his wife concerning their near demise as part of Bank's Expedition, reading, in part: "…I am hear in New Orleans…they have maid a grate talk about us [while aboard the Chas. Osgood.] They have said that we were lost. We have come as near it as could and be a safe. We come dreadful near it last Saturday night. We had a dreadful night of it. We left Key West last Friday morning and got about 150 miles from thaire and it began to blow and it did blow…we all began to make up our minds it was all day with us but it didn't happen…to make more trouble Tuesday morning we run ashore again on Ship Island…thaire is one vessel that started when we did that has not been heard from yet. She, they think, has gorn to the bottom…the vessel is Shetucket. We saw her crossing the Delaware Bay. We sent out to but found that we should go down if we did and backed out and we haven't seen her since…direct [your letters to] Bankes Expedition 42 Rig. Mass, Co. K…if you should send me a dollar no knowing as I should get it…they wont take anything but Government money and then it is hard to get a dollar changed. If I want any I shall send for one dollar the next time I write…Julius Varney." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Light toning, else VG.
