War-date 7th New York National Guard letter, 4pp. 8vo., unsigned, (letters from this regiment almost never appear in the marketplace) written by William M. Van Wagenen (1842-1866), later U. S. Christian Commission Agent, [Baltimore, Md.], August 5, 1862, reading, in part: "…my Bunk…we were reviewed by General Morris. The parade was with knapsacks, overcoats & blankets in full marching dress. I found it rather too warm to be at all agreeable. On Friday we paraded through the city as a general escort to Col. Monroe of the 22nd N. Y. S. M. Last week 20 of our company were sent to take some rebel prisoners to Fortress Monroe….yesterday, in accordance with the orders of the War Department, the death of Pres. Van Buren was noticed. A salute of 13 guns was fired from the 32 & 64 pounders in the fort…at every half hour through the day one gun was fired…at 'retreat'…34 guns were fired. As the 7th Regt. was originally an artillery regiment the practice in the guns will come very good. I…understand it theoretically…the guns are very heavy and hard to move. Several large mortars…have been recently mounted by the engineer corps. Yesterday…we had a short parade when the order of the U. S. President was read with reference to Van Buren. The Riblet that you spoke of is captain of Co. 4th. He is an old man & the second officer in the regiment…he is not very strict as his company is not well drilled…". Unsigned, else VGhe second officer in the regiment…he is not very strict as his company is not well drilled…". Unsigned, else VG
