Pre-printed official U. S. Christian Commission enrollment announcement letter, 1p. 8vo., issued to U.S. Christian Commission Agent William Van Wagenen, Washington, D. C., July 25, 1864, reading, in part: "I am directed to inform you that you are enrolled and…subject to the United States draft in this district…send to this office an official certificate that you are elsewhere enrolled, or…of an age not suitable for enrollment…JNO. R. THURSTON, A. A. U. S. C. C.". Apparently, draft enrollments were a problem in the District of Columbia for the Christian Commission since they found it necessary to pre-print these letters. This one is the first we have ever encountered in the marketplace making it a most certain rarity. Light toning, else VG.
