SCHOFIELD, John McAllister (1831-1906) was an American soldier who held major commands during the American Civil War. He later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant, and Commanding General of the United States Army. Autograph Letter Signed "J.M. Schofield, 2pp. octavo, Headquarters Division of the Missouri, March 3, 1886, and reads in part: "...I have just received your letter of March 1st explaining your desire for 'An old war letter' which I should be glad to gratify if possible..." Fine condition.
