Melton, reading, in part: "Sir, I received instructions from the Sec't. of War [George W. Randolph] to vacate the Court House…I have looked this town over and cannot get a…guard house. I have a great many prisoners…and a small guard…it will be impossible to keep prisoners from escaping…H. B. Davidson, Col. Comdg." Minor spotting, else VG.
