LEE, Robert Edward (1807-1870) was an American Confederate general best known as a commander of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He commanded the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until its surrender in 1865 and earned a reputation as a skilled tactician. War-date Manuscript Document Signed "R.E. Lee" as general, 2pp. quarto, Head Quarters, Department of North Virginia, October 15, 1862, and reads in most part: "...Having great confidence in the recommendation of Genl. Ransom & Col. Clarke, I do not hesitate to recommend Mr. Valk for the position of Asst. Qr. Mr. believing from his testimonials that he will prove an active & efficient officer, his position & services claim something for him from the Government...". This is beneath an ALS by Mathew W. Ransom, as Colonel 35th North Carolina, endorsing John M.E. Valk of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Some repairs, missing a top portion of sheet but does not affect the Lee nor Ransom portion of letter. About very good condition.
