Autograph Letter Signed by "Jno Underwood, U.S. Marshal", Richmond VA., November 22, 1867, 1pp., Fine. The letter is written to Lewis D. Crenshaw, in full; "I am directed to summon you as a witness to appear before the US Circuit Court on Monday next (25th) at 11AM on behalf of the US against Mr. Jefferson Davis. Please attend promptly".In 1861, when Richmond was named the capital of the Confederate States of America, a home was needed for the newly elected President Jefferson Davis and his family. The City of Richmond purchased the residence, and all its contents, from Mr. Crenshaw, paying approximately $42,000 for everything. The City of Richmond then leased the dwelling, with furnishings, to the Confederacy, to be used as the President's Executive Mansion.
