CRITTENDEN, John Jordan (1787-1863) was an American statesman and politician from the U.S. state of Kentucky. He represented the state in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate and twice served as United States Attorney General in the administrations of William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. He was also the 17th governor of Kentucky and served in the state legislature. Although frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for the U.S. presidency, he never consented to run for the office.Autograph Letter Signed "J.J. Crittenden" 1-1/2pp. quarto, Washington, January 1, 1847, addressed to "J. Blunt" and reads in part: "... The death of my excellent friend Mr. Barrow, of the Senate, has so diverted my attention as to prevent me from attending as soon as I otherwise should have done to your letter of the 26th of the last month....Time is always an important element in that question, & blundering on as we are with this Mexican war, I do not well see how we can now avoid the necessity of borrowing money..."
