A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., "Bermuda Hundred, [City Point], Va., July 9, 1864," written to his wife, in part: "-I am - on the Peninsula - we had moved from the fort to the Landing. We are still here unloading vessels. My business is to work in the arsenal a somewhat dangerous business but in God is my trust - one instance as I was busy going my part filling 30 lbs. Parrott percussion shells with powder in connection with several artillerymen. Onto the floor of the ship. We almost held our breath. The cap did not explode. One of the monsters rolls from the table - my Dear wife is not a widow, thank God - I trust through his protecting care and sustaining grace to live to return to you - I regret that this beautiful Sabbath morning I again have to go to work filling shells - James O.
