Union soldier's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., Suffolk, Va., April 19, 1863, to his parents, reading in part: "-we marched to Alexandria (in the rain and stood in it about 3 hours), got on a boat and the river being ruff stayed all night there - passed Mount Vernon - took the cars to Suffolk - are encamped about 1 mile from the village near the Nansemond river with the rebus close on the other side of us. There is some gunboats on the river that keeps throwing shells over to them - the sharpshooters keep pecking away at one another when they get a chance. We are under Gen. Peck now. We was sent down here as reinforcements. The force here is 50 or 60 thousand - Gen. Corcoran is here. I saw him today. He got into a dispute last Tuesday with Lieut. Col. and shot him. [Gen. Corcoran fatally shot Lt. Col. Edgar Kimball of the Hawkin's Zouaves in the neck after Kimball refused to let Gen. Corcoran pass during a night patrol.] I saw Gen. Dix yesterday. He is quite an old man. I would not wonder if they had a little brush here if the Rebs don't retreat. They are in the woods so we cannot see them. We are within 12 miles of North Carolina - we passed through a corner of the Dismal Swamp - there is a lot of Niggers shanties close by here and they call it Unionville and keep a guard around the d-n Niggers - Mark Walker." An original stamped transmittal cover is included. Negligible spotting, else VG.
