A rare original printed and manuscript completed ticket, 4" x 1-5/8" for the WASHINGTON CITY CANAL LOTTERY, held in 1796 to raise funds to cut a canal through the newly created District of Columbia to connect Tiber Creek with the Potomac River. This lottery ticket was signed by NOTLEY YOUNG [1738-1802], whose family were the original proprietors of parts of the land donated to create the City of Washington. The Capitol building was built near where his house once stood. The reverse has the following manuscript, "George Town, August 9, (17)97, I do hereby certify that I consign my right and title to No. 3576 which a prize of 12$ to Joseph Mitchell, Andrew Hilton."
