SMITH, Melancton (1810-1893) was a United States Navy officer who served during the Seminole Wars and the American Civil War. Document Signed, "Melancton Smith" 1pp., 8" x 10", datelined U.S. Mattabesett, Albermarle Sound (NC) May 20, 1864 to Commander R.T. Renshaw, U.S.S. Miami off Roanoke Island. Smith orders Renshaw to join him at Albermarle. Fine. Miami was employed in the North Carolina Sounds area, participating in a number of actions. On 19 April 1864, she engaged the Confederate ironclad Albemarle, a battle that resulted in the death of Miami's Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Charles W. Flusser.
