June 3, 1865-Dated Civil War Era, Partly-Printed Document, Hicksford, Va., Choice Very Fine. This original Partly-Printed Document measures about 4" x 3.5". Being a record for the taking of the "Oath of Allegiance" to the United States. Document reads, in full; "Hd. Qrs. Military Commandant, Sub-District, Dept. of Virginia, Sub District of the Blackwater, Hicksford, Va., June 3 1865. I do hereby certify that on the 3rd day of June 1865, at Hicksford the oath prescribed by the President of the United States, in his proclamation of December 8, 1863, was duly taken, subscribed and made matter of record by Andrew Briggs of Sussex Co Va / Bernard Mercer Provost Marshal / Capt 2nd Pa vet. art." It is printed on white wove period paper and boldly completed and signed in rich brown ink on clean light blue lined paper. A choice, pleasing example of this historic document.
