Button Gwinnett (March 3, 1735 – May 19, 1777) was an English-born American Founding Father who, as a representative of Georgia to the Continental Congress, was one of the signatories (first signature on the left) on the United States Declaration of Independence. He was also, briefly, the provisional president of Georgia in 1777, and Gwinnett County (now a major suburb of metropolitan Atlanta) was named for him. He was named in honor of his mother’s cousin, Barbara Button, who became his godmother. [1] [2] Gwinnett was killed in a duel by rival Lachlan McIntosh following a dispute after a failed invasion of East Florida. FORGERY. Signature cut and mounted to a larger sheet measuring 4 ¾” x 2”. “presence of – Button Gwinett, Martin Bourne”. An old forgery of the this legendary autograph rarity. Fine. In total, there are only 51 Button Gwinnett signatures known to man, most of which are IOUs. Forty-one of these autographs are in libraries and museums.
