A complete and authentic issue of the Columbia Centinel & Massachusetts Federalist, October 29, 1803, 4pp., disbound, loose at spine, VG. The Boston publication reports both national and local news. Rarely seen, on the back page “TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS Reward” reports a runaway women slave with 28 lines of descriptive information. In small part “Absented herself last night from the servive of Mr. Rutledge, a negro Woman, who is his property, named Phillis, 35 years old ... yellowish complexion, between a that of a negro and a mulatto ... also “A Black Fellow nemed Peter absented himself from the service of Mr. Rutledge some weeks past when he was in Boston ... he is an excellent coachman and a tolerable cook, plays the tamberine and is very fond of dancing. ... the above reward of 200 dollars, or 100 for either”. This ad was placed by Chester Clark who was at Weathersfield Connecticut. Clearly slaves Phillis and Peter were tarveling with their master from slave states and were now taking advantage of the santuary status of Massachusetts. Also in this the House of Representitives, a resolution noting the death of patriot Samuel Adams.
