Confederate officer's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. William M. Cochran, Co. F, 36th Georgia Infantry, "Camp near Dalton, Ga., Jan. 4, 1864" to his cousin Eliza Jane Hardman of Stone Mountain, Georgia, reading, in part: "-this leaves me and this company all in very good health - Janie, there is nothing strange in camps. There is some of the coldest weather I ever saw in my life - I guess you seen a very nice time in Christmas and new years day. I got very tite. It was the only fun I seen in this whole time. Cousin, in regard to Mr. Powell [Pvt. Leonard C. Powell, Co. E, 7th Georgia Infantry, WIA Wilderness, Va., May 6, 1864]. I guess if you will send him a note to: Baumers' Station, Virginny, Longstreet's army - I guess he will get his note through. I cant hear anything from none of the army [of Northern Virginia]. The last I heard they was at Baumer Station, Virginia - there mail will go round by Richmond your cousin, Lt. W. M. Cochran - you must excuse me for franking this as I have no stamps upon me here. I think I have one but I am seaving it to send Sara one - tell Miss. Carey Johnson. W. M. Ellison is creeping about but not well." PLUS; a very rare Confederate Army of the Tennessee field cancelled "DUE 10, Chattanooga, Tenn., Jan. 4, 1864" transmittal cover, addressed: "E. J. Hardman, Stone Mountain, Georgia." Following the battle of Chickamauga the Confederate Army of Tennessee evacuated Chattanooga, but not before taking that city's date stamp with them. The army then used that date stamp "in the field' until January, 1864. The cover is also franked: "Lt. Cochran, Co. F, 36 Ga." is included. Fully transcribed. Overall VG.
