STEUART, George Hume (1828-1903) was a planter in Maryland and an American military officer; he served thirteen years in the United States Army before resigning his commission at the start of the American Civil War. He joined the Confederacy and rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Army of Northern Virginia. Nicknamed "Maryland" to avoid verbal confusion with Virginia cavalryman J.E.B. Stuart, Steuart unsuccessfully promoted the secession of Maryland before and during the conflict. He began the war as a captain of the 1st Maryland Infantry, CSA, and was promoted to colonel after the First Battle of Manassas. In 1862 he became brigadier general. Document Signed “Geo. H. Steuart” with endorsement on reverse of document. The 2pp. document is datelined, Co. A. &th Va. Infantry, Nov. 14, 1864, written to Chief of Conscription Bureau, Richmond, and in part, “I respectfully report that private James W. Gilliam, Co. A. 9th VA Inftry. ... is a deserter and request that he be arrested and returned to the company. Private Gilliam may be found at his residence near Hicksford in the county of Greensville Virginia. On the reverse we have the various upchain approval/forwarding including that of Steuart’s “Approved and requested may be taken for his arrest and delivered here, Geo. H. Steuart”.
