HAMPTON, Wade (1819 - 1902) Confederate lieutenant general of cavalry whose daring exploits at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg won him fame in both North and South. Autograph Letter Signed “Wade Hampton, Gen’l”, 2pp, hurridly written in pencil, likely from the saddle. Dateline Winnisboro, 19th White Oak, to Gen’l Beauregard. In part, “ Scouts report. Enemy on road gone back to Columbia. No enemy were on Columbia & Winnisboro road within 2 miles Columbia this evening. No advance in this direction. I propose send Butler behind enemy ... do you approve ... Wade Hampton, Gen’l”.
