A good Federal soldier’s letter written by Sgt William J. Likely who enlisted 8/8/1862 in Co. A. Wisconsin 33rd Infantry. The 4pp letter is datelined Camp of the 33rd WI Vol, Memphis Tenn., June 1, 1864. In part, “There was small paries of Rebels on both sides of the River. ... After banks was wiped out at Pleasant Hill we went up one day and came to where the Rebels had blockaded the river by sinking a boat across it. ... The river was so narrow that some of the large boats ahad to run backwards ... The second day we were fitred on. They did not kill any one on our boat, one or two wounded. ... They ahd a battery planted on a bluff, so the Gun Boats could not affect them. Some of the boats got aground and the Rebels charged them and fired onto them. They did kill many of our men and wounded quite a number ...”
