Bound volume of The (London) Monthly Review; or, Literary Journal (July 1775-Jan. 1776), containing six issues (608 pages plus index). This volume carries some American Revolutionary War-era reports to include: "A calm address to our American Colonies" by John Wesley, (349-350), with reply to his remarks; "Conduct of administration with regard to the Colonies, (438-441); "A view of the several schemes with respect to America," (512-513); "Arguments in support of the Supremacy of the British legislature and their right to tax the Americans," (351); "A declaration of the people's natural rights to share in the legislature," (179-181); Speech of Edmund Burke on "The American Controversy." (73-79). "A new system for the establishment, pay, clothing, provisions, &c of the (British) Army." (444); "Remarks on principal acts of Parliament as it relates to the situation in America" and Canada. (64-72; 159-165); An interesting account of botanist Philibert Commerson and his celebrated voyage around the world (599-607). Footnote to this adventure (not in this report) is that a woman, Jeanne Baret, dressed as a man to go along on this first French circumnavigation of the globe. Commerson hired her on the spot, as her "knowledge of flora was unsurpassed." Her gender was ultimately revealed, but it meant she became the first woman to sail around the world! Go to the "Adventure Journal" website to read her fascinating tale. The volume is filled with eclectic accounts in such areas as military, geography, science and math, dramatic arts, poetical works, religion (to include several sermons), foreign reports, medicine; commentaries on MacPherson's History of Britain, essay on the "genius and writings of Homer," (369-379); "Life of Petrarch" (222-231), Notes and readings on the works of Shakespeare (395-403); "Architectures of Antiquity (413-419) and "The Possibilities of reaching the North Pole (125-128). Volume generally in good shape. Covers loose, but spine still pretty tight. $200-$300
