Manuscript letter book, 7" x 8-1/4" hard boards present but loose, with 80 lined pages. The front board has a label "Sentences of Court Martial / Confederate Army / Yorktown, Va." The first 10 pages included summaries of 24 cases. As an example, "Private James Finnerty, 14th Reg. La Vols, General order No. 140, Dated 21st October 1861. Sentenced by Court Martial assembled at Yorktown, October 7, 1861 ... to twelve months hard labor and confinement under guard with a 12lb Ball and Chain attached to his left leg and forfeiture of his pay." The sentences range from Oct. 1861 through Feb. 1862. When the book is turned upside down, there are two pages of receipts, a blank leaf, then a three-page summary of the council investigating post sutlers with a date of March 10, 1862. The board decided that all sutlers needed to be re-licensed and agree not to sell "spirituous liquor," and if they do, the liquor can be seized and the sutler fined $100. There are 9 pages of receipts, 1862.
