A rare order of exercise booklet from a patriotic meeting held at the Old South Meeting House, Boston on May 1, 1861, published by Alfred Mudge, Boston. This rare, 8vo., 16pp., glazed paper wrap booklet bears a brightly colored rendition of the American flag and is entitled: "Consecration of the Flag of the Union. Old South Meeting-House, May 1, 1861."The title page, reads, in full: "Exercises at a Consecration of the Flag of The Union, By the Old South Society in Boston, May 1st, 1861. " With an opening statement outlining the exercises' meaning, reads, in very small part that: "In this day of disaster and disruption, when national harmony is disturbed, when the beautiful order of the Republic is broken up…and our posterity are in peril. The standing committee of the Old South Society, with the pastors and officers of the church, have deemed it eminently proper for them to unite with their fellow citizens, in expressions of loyalty to the Government, in its effort to restore order, peace and justice throughout the land…".
