Union soldier 4pp. letter written by Sergt. Nathan E. Cory who mustered into "C" Co. PA 101st Infantry and was reported as POW 4/20/1864 Plymouth, NC. Mustered Out on 6/25/1865 at New Berne, NC. Datelined, White Oak Swamp June the 5th, 1862, to his brother-in-law. In part, "The Rebels made the attack on us last Saturday. ... WE GAVE THEM A FEW ROUNDS, BUT THEY CAME ON US TOO STRONG AND DROVE US IN. THEIR SKIRMISHERS KILLED AND WOUNDED SOME OF OUR PICKETS, AND WE KILLED A GOOD MANY OF THEM, BUT THEIR SKIRMISHERS AND US PICKETS FIGHTING WAS JUST FUN TILL THEIR BIG ARMY CAME UP. ... THEN IT WAS DARNED HARD FUN. THEY HAD OVER ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND COME ON TO US, AND WE HAD ONLY ABOUT SIX THOUSAND TILL OUR REINFORCEMENTS CAME AND THAT WAS ABOUT THREE HOURS. IN THAT TIME THEY DROVE US OUT OF OUR CAMP AND TOOK EVERYTHING WE HAD, BUT IT WAS DAMMED LITTLE WE HAD. ... THERE WAS 3 KILLED AND 5 WOUNDED IN OUR COMPANY. I WILL GIVE YOU THEIR NAMES.
