Union 4pp. letter written by Caswell A. Bates who on 8/16/1861 he mustered into "I" Co. NY 48th Infantry He was Killed on 7/18/1863 at Fort Wagner, SC. Dateline, Camp Perry, Daufuskie Island, SC. Feby 27, 1862. In part, "We are now on Daufuskie Island as you see from above ... it is situated in the edge of Pine wood and in sight of Fort Pulaski and the city of Savannah both occupied by the Rebels. We are so close to the fort as to see their flag flying on the staff. We are now engaged in building two batteries on the Savannah river, between the city and the fort ... situated on Bird Island and the other on James Island .. our objective in building there is to cut off communications between the Fort and the City which we have now done by Water. I think by the next letter I write, we shall be in possession of Savannah and I hope the Fort. Our General moves slow but I think sure and with out loss. ...."
