A Union soldier's 4pp., letter written by Philander C. Wetmore who, on 9/1/1862 mustered into "C" Co. VT 10th Infantry and was discharged for disability on 5/15/1865. Dateline February 7/63, Camp at Whits Ford, Army of the Potomac, to Friend Emma. In part, "It is a long time since you and I were school mates ... I have not written you nor you to me, to be shure it belonged to me to write first. for the first time in my life happiness has disappeared. .. I wonder if God is living if he is, I think he has forgotten all his children. ... I have not been sick at all since I come out here ... in this regiment we have lost over 100 men all by disease. ... the boys are all feeling ... the war is most over but I cant see it. .. The other morning one of the boys put some powder in my pipe and it blew off the griddles. This morning he asked me for a pipe of tobacco. I gave him some with powder in and he went to smoking . It went off, blew off his cap and burnt his face a little. I suppose he had forgotten it but I had not forgotten. ..."
