Union solder's 3pp. letter written by James H. Troy who on 4/22/1861 mustered into "F" Co. MA 6th Infantry , and was mustered out on 8/26/1865 at Savannah, Ga. Datelined Camp near Franklin Louisiana, February 10th, 1864 written to Charles Shedd, Town Clerk of Methuen, Mass.. In part, "I being the only officer connected with the 26th Mass Regmt from the town of Methuen, consider it my duty to inform you of the re-enlistment of men formally resident of your town ..." Troy then names the six soldiers and continues, "They have enlisted as coming from the town of Methuen and consequently are entitled to any privaledge that may be offered by the town ... Fall River and a number of other towns have offered a premium to men that have re-enlisted ..."
