Union soldier's 3pp. letter with original cover, written by Abraham Kaley who mustered into "I" Co. PA 53rd Infantry, 10/10/61. Abraham wrote this letter in October 1864 while serving in Co. A, October 14, [64]. In part, "I am almost at a loss to know what to write to you as the news is all war news here at present which are of a stirring character and in some respect are favorable on our side and some gloomy. The late battle in the west under Rosecrans [see Battle of Chickamauga] has not been as successful as was looked for in that quarter but I hope there will be something done there before long. They are sending him reinforcements from all quarters. There was two Corps went out to him from the army of the Potomac under General Hooker. ... There has been a fight with the Rebels again in Virginia and our army has gained the victory [see Battle of Tom's Brook] and the report is that they are fighting today but I have not heard the result of it. ..."
