Framed Print, 28" x 22", from a drawing by F.O.C Darley, published by H.H. Willes, Hartford, CT, copyright 1883 by J.P. Fitch. The image graphically shows General Sherman, with a spyglass, watching the Atlanta fire while his troops tear up the railroad and the telegraph lines. A family of refugee slaves is in the foreground. The print has water staining in the lower margin. After taking Atlanta on Sept. 2, 1864, Sherman led his 62,000-man army across Georgia to Savannah. Foraging off the countryside, they destroyed mills and cotton gins, confiscated livestock, looted homes and tore up more than 200 miles of rail lines, as shown here.
