An oversized, well-packed ca. 1900 snap shot album, approximately 85 pages, measuring 15" x 11", related to the Walker family of Baltimore, Maryland. The album contains hundreds of of family travel photos and military images with nearly all related to the 4th Maryland National Guard dating between 1904 and 1912.Views include numerous Civil War related scenes include views of Civil War monuments including a 6th Corps battlefield monument, an equestrian statue dedicated to General Winfield Scott Hancock, view of a GAR member, the monument honoring the Confederate dead in Loudon Cemetery, Baltimore plus one page dedicated to views of Fredericksburg, Virginia's National Civil War Cemetery. The travel images show the family on many summertime excisions including of their time on the water and then on land at sites such as at Fort McHenry, Harpers Ferry, an image of a caged lion at an unnamed zoo with even some Black Americana related views. The military scenes nearly all relate to the 4th Infantry Maryland National Guards with the album's unnamed owner being obviously a proud member of the Maryland National Guards. There are a trio of images of him spanning his military career. First, as a young mustachioed man wearing a gray Civil War era militia style uniform. Next, as a plump 1st sergeant wearing the 5th's uniform, circa 1880 and finally a standing pose of him wearing an officer's winter overcoat, ca. 1910.Over half the album is dedicated to the 4th Maryland including numerous portraits of the unit's officers and men including them posed in camp, on the march, at drill, at play and even on parade. Encampments include Pine Camp, New York, July 1908, Camp Crothers, Westminster, Md, July 1909 and Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania, 1912. We would like to note that there are several striking images including full page images of officers on horse back, of women dressed in full military uniforms along with a full page image of a sutler's tent set up in camp with men posed throughout. There is one page is dedicated to the memory of Major Monmonier Rowe with portraits of him, his obituary, along with a 48-star silk American flag attached to the top of the page. Miscellaneous items contained within are a political ribbon celebrating Maryland Governor Phillip Goldsborough 1911 inaugural mounted to a page plus four loose images that included two lovely cabinet cards of a young woman both with Maryland photographer's imprints. Finally, pasted down to the inside front cover is a typed letter written by the colonel of the 4th Maryland National Guard, on the regiment's stationery addressed to Sergeant W. W. Walker, 1910. A great album that is worthy of research. Expected wear, else VG to near fine.
