John Buchanan Floyd (1806-1863) was the 31st Governor of Virginia, U.S. Secretary of War, and the Confederate general in the American Civil War who lost the crucial Battle of Fort Donelson. Letter Signed "John B. Floyd" as Secretary of War, to Hon. J.S. Black, Attorney General, Washington, September 9, 1857. In part, "I have the honor to transmit the title papers .. to a land tract .. which is proposed to purchase for the Washington Aquaduct and request your official opinion as to the sufficiency of the title."
