Martin Witherspoon Gary (1831-1881) was an attorney, soldier, and politician from South Carolina. He attained the rank of brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Active in the battles of Virginia through mid-1863, and refused to surrender with Lee at Appomattox. Gary instead led 200 men to escort President Davis and his cabinet from Greensboro, North Carolina, to his mother's house in Cokesbury.Autograph Letter Signed "M.W. Gary" on his 'Law Office of Gen'l M.W. Gary' letterhead, 1pp., July 2, 1872. In part, "I received the papers for which accept my cordial thanks. ... I think will reach the proper sentiment - I find that our side is duly growing in popularity ..." This letter refers to the Red Shirt Campaign where the former Confederate Officers attacked the he Republican leaders of 1868,1872, and 1876". Martin W. Gary was the preeminent "Southern Brigadier of the Reconstruction Period" leader..
