William "Extra Billy" Smith (1797-1887) was a lawyer, congressman, the 30th and 35th Governor of Virginia, and a major general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. On his appointment in January 1863, at 65, Smith was the oldest Confederate general to hold field command in the war. Autograph Letter Signed "W(illiam) Smith" datelined Warrenton Va, July 3, 1883, 1pp. to General (Marcus) Wright. In part, "... my request that you will so arrange with the proper clerk as to insure the prompt transmission to me of the 'War Record' as the volumes serially appear. ... I have the first seven volumes ..."
