Paymaster Muster, 28" x 18", covering period of January 1, 1862 through February 28, 1862 and listing payments made for both the officers and the 28 servants. The statement in part, "We certify on honor that we actually employed the servants, for which we have received payment ... and did not at any time employ a soldier as a servant, that the annexed is an accurate description of the servants, that we were actually in command of the company for the whole time ...." The servants are each named beneath the name of the corresponding officer. There is a column "Complexion" where terms such as Colored man, Colored, Black, Dark as used on about half the servants.Throughout the war, the Union used thousands of Blacks as servants, teamsters, laborers, cooks, and in other support duties. These types of duties did not qualify them as soldiers. Some of these servants may have joined the armies as soldiers later in the war..
