Monthly Return of Captain Casner of the 91st PA Volunteers. Company K. Casner enlisted on 9/24/1861 at Philadelphia, PA as a Captain, was commissioned into "K" Co. PA 91st Infantry and was Mustered Out on 7/10/1865 at Washington, DC. He was wounded 10/27/1864 Hatcher's Run, VA. The return, 16" x 10" is dated November 1, 1862, Camp below Harpers Ferry and signed by "John F. Casner, Capt.". Strong commentary includes, "Left Camp near Sharpsburg on morning of 16th Oct. 5AM. Marched to Potomac, crossed opposite Shepardstown ... Encountered the enemy, losing one corporal while skirmishing. .. Rested in line of battle after which we returned through Shepardstown, crossing at the same ford and arrive at camp on the same field. ... 30th Oct 2pm marched through Sharpsburg and proceeded to a point about 7 miles beyond town. ... Crossed the Potomac, thence through Harper's Ferry and crossed Shenandoah on pontoon bridge ..." He lists the 9 men absent and the reasons, 6 of which were sick, one AWOL, and two reassigned. On the reverse he list James McCarty and John Groft as Deserted.
