Union soldier's letter written by Martin Minter who enlisted on 8/22/1862 as a private into "D" Co. MD 8th Infantry and was mustered out 5/31/1865 at Arlington Heights, VA. The four page letter is not dated (circa November 1862), in part, "There is a mountain here called Maryland Heights .. I went up there last week. You can see Martinsburg and Charleston .. It shows that there was a hard battle fought there ... I seen where the rebels were buried. There was one lieutenant found sitting against a tree. He had a blanket around himself He was dead.... Along the canals bridges were burnt down ... I am still upholding for the Union. ... There is only one thing I object against - that is Lincoln's proclamation he made, about making negroes free. I think it is wrong. ..."
