Union soldier's pencil2pp. letter written to his father by Ellis Strouss who enlisted on 11/1/1861 as a private into "K" Co. PA 57th Infantry and was Mustered Out on 6/29/1865 at Alexandria, Va. Strouss was wounded 6/30/1862 Charles City Cross Roads, V. and again 5/5/1864 Wilderness, VA. Datelined June 5, 1862, 7 Miles East of Richmond, in part, "We had a hard battle near this place. I took part in it and got out safe. Capt Chase I'm sorry to say was wounded in the leg .. Our Colonel was badly wounded in the loins. Our Major was killed. Our Company loss is two killed and two wounded. ... the Battle we fought here is called in an order read to us today, the Battle of Fair Oaks. .."
