A Union soldier's letter written and signed by "Wallace", datelined Camp at Carlisle, Pa., Sept 16, 1863 with cover, CDC Carlisle to May F. Mitchell. Wallace Mitchell, on 9/6/1862 he mustered into "C" Co. PA 16th Cavalry. In part, "I see by the papers that they have erected Barracks opposite Alexandria for the purpose of drilling the Cavalrymen and horses so I suppose I will go there... Tonight's paper says our Cavalry has driven the Rebs across the Rappadan ... An ambrotype man wants I should help him here in camp. ... I don't care much about working now I've got so many green backs. .. The boys are in town spending money for drinks .. ..."
