Ledger, 10-1/2" x 15-1/2" with separate part printed cover, cloth bound. The cover text "For The Bureau of Military Record, RECORD of the Town of Masonville, County of Delaware, Prepared by the Town Clerk, as Required by Chapter 690 of Laws of 1865." From page one we get even a more exciting printed description of the ledger. "Complete Record ... Officers, Soldiers, and Seaman, Composing the Quotas of the Troops Furnished to the United States by Town of Masonville, County of Delaware, State of New York, In the war of Rebellion, covering the period from the 15th Day of April, 1861 to the Date of the Certificate of the Town Clerk, Attached to this Record." The referred certificate is present near the back. "Certificate of Town Clerk, It is hereby certified ... that the preceding pages contain a full and complete record of the names of Officers, and Soldiers who have entered the Military Service .... Masonville, September 26, 1865" It is signed by the town clerk, Edward G, Heath. The interior 56 ledger pages are filled with the manuscript records of soldier names, vocations, and what happened - deaths, battles fought, wounded, service time, duties (even chaplains) and more. As example, Ebeneazer Kentfield, Farmer "In two battles Fair Oaks and Spotsylvania where he was wounded in the arm. His arm amputated the same day. Died at home May 5, 1865 .." ... John Reynolds, farmer "In one battle at Fair Oaks was wounded and died on the Battlefield June 1, 1862. Buried near where killed." ... Vespatian Wilson, Farmer "In 12 battles .... wounded 7 Pines and taken prisoner ..." ... Nelson finch, Farmer "In one battle Weldon Railroad, killed on the battle field by Sharp Shooter Oct 1, 1864. Buried on the battle field." The is simply packed with the significant service records of hundreds of soldiers all from the small town of Masonville New York whose 2010 population is 1,310.
