Philippe of Orléans, Count of Paris (1838-1894) was King of the French from 24 to 26 February 1848 as Louis Philippe II, although he was never officially proclaimed as such. A historian, journalist and outspoken democrat, Philippe volunteered to serve as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War along with his younger brother, Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres. He was appointed as an assistant adjutant general with the rank of captain on 24 September 1861 and served under the name of Philippe d'Orléans, the Count of Paris. He served on the staff of the commander of the Army of the Potomac, Major General George B. McClellan, for nearly a year. Group of three ALSs, May 31, 1869, April 2, 1879, and November 26, 1879. The November 26th letter refers to the American Civil War, in part "There is no doubt that the Bald Hill is one of the summits .. on which the night fight was fought ... The house standing on the nose of Lookout mountain ... accounts of the fight on Lookout of which copies made at the War Department were kindly sent to me by General Townsend ... Your description of ... blockade of the Chattanooga is very interesting ... Rosecrans having planned and prepared the whole operation , Grant came just in time to deprive the honor he was about to reap.
