Exceptionally rare document, 8" x 6", U.S. Order for Transportation, October 26, 1865 issued to John E. Vasson. on the reverse we find the explanation, "Genl. D.H. Rucker, Please provide transportation for John E. Vasser, Esq. agent American Tract Society, NY City, with 400 lbs of freight to Fredericksburg VA. To repair buildings of Colored Schoolss at Fredericksburg. By order of Maj. Genl. O.O. Howard..."Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the Civil War. As a brigade commander in the Army of the Potomac, Howard lost his right arm while leading his men against Confederate forces at the Battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines in June 1862, an action which later earned him the Medal of Honor. Known as the "Christian General" because he tried to base his policy decisions on his deep, evangelical piety, he was given charge of the Freedmen's Bureau in mid-1865, with the mission of integrating the former slaves into Southern society and politics during the second phase of the Reconstruction Era.John Ellison Vassar (1813-1878) was an American lay preacher and missionary. After the war, his missionary work for the Tract Society took him to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Florida. He was popularly known as "Uncle John". Known for his zeal and powerful preaching, John Ellison Vassar was one of America's most widely known evangelists.
