William Mahone (1826-1895) was an American civil engineer, railroad executive, Confederate States Army general, and Virginia politician. Mahone was pro-secession and was best known for regaining the initiative at the late war siege of Petersburg, Virginia, while Confederate troops were in shock after a huge load of black powder kegs was exploded beneath them, resulting in the Battle of the Crater in July 1864. Partially Printed Document Signed, "Wm Mahone", as president, 1p, 11" x 7.25", Norfolk, November 15, 1873, a stock certificate, No. 747, issuing seven shares of the Atlantic Mississippi & Ohio Rail Road Company to James C. Taylor. Countersigned by James Cuthbert, "James E. Cuthbert", as treasurer, with additional signatures at verso witnessing stock transfer. Blind-embossed stamp at lower left. Scattered pinholes. Folds and light creasing. Uneven left edge. In fine condition.
