A Confederate soldier's seven pp. letter written by Barney D. Hansell who enlisted on 9/28/1861 as a Corporal and mustered into "B" Co. MS Jeff Davis Leg. Cavalry and was surrendered on 4/26/1865 at Durham Station, N.C.The lengthy letter is accompanied by the original cover. Datelined HeadquartersSubsistence Department, 1st Cavalry Division, December 20, 1864. Very folksy letter, in part "We are finely situated now near the depot and getting plenty of corn fodder for our horses and living with plenty of provisions for our men and issuing brandy and sorghum, coffe, sugar, sweet irish potatoes. The boys anticipate a lively time Christmas ... How much I want to come to Madison to see you all. Have been thinking to come to up at your request Christmas ..."
