Confederate officer's letter, written and signed by James B. Jordan who, on 5/29/1861, was commissioned into "D" Co. NC 26th Infantry, wounded in the hip at Gettysburg, went to a Union Hospital and then sent on to Johnson's Island for the duration of the War. The NC 26th began Gettysburg with 800 men, losing 584 on the 1st day and another 130 on the 3rd day, leaving 86 out of 800.This letter is written to Mattie Fearn, referred to "Cuz", yet later became his wife. Datelined, Island Home, March 9, 1865, in part, "informed me that you sent me clothing and food and sent without a permit. Miss Mattie, did I not ask you not to do that? .. I will make every effort to get possession ... whether I do or I do not, please accept my sincere thanks and be of good cheer ... I am not gone and greatly fear I shall be here for weeks yet. The ice .. has kept us here for a long time, and when it does get out of the way, something else will hinder us. ... Your affectionate Cuz, James B. Jordan." Included is the original cover with examiner's stamp, "Prisoner's Letter, Johnson's Island".Included are dozens of xerox copies regarding the 26th including one page with9 officers image including Jordan's image.
