Autograph Letter Signed "Jno M. Robinson, Mil(itary) Sup(erintendant)", 2pp., Greensboro, April 18, 1865, 8:30 o'clock written to Col. W.G. Brent. In part, "It has just been reported to me by Captain Webb that Gen. Beauregard has ordered certain cars loaded with ammunition to be moved from the neighborhood of the cars occupied. I also learn that the order has not been carried out. I sent at once to the agent ... to ask why ... I find that Mr. Oates lately agent here has gone away without giving notice. ... As soon as Mr. Springle can be found I will endeavor to have Gen. Beauregard wishes complied with." Arriving by the Piedmont Railroad at Greensboro on April 11, 1865, Davis's cabinet found a cold reception from residents, due mainly to Richmond's perceived mismanagement of the war effort. While Davis found quarters with the nephew of his first wife, John Taylor Wood, his advisors were forced to make the "Cabinet Car," a decrepit wooden boxcar, their mobile boardroom and sleeping quarters. Throughout April 12 and 13, Davis held meetings with his staff and generals Joseph E. Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard on the feasibility of uniting tattered Confederate forces against the north or sending General Johnston to broker peace with the Union. After the meetings, Davis and his cabinet procured wagons and left Greensboro on April 15. Brent surrendered with General Johnston and his troops in Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865. UNC holds a letter from Robinson to Brent: 1865 April 17 imploring him to get the President and Superintendent of the North Carolina Railroad to remove all the extra trains between Greensboro and Jamestown to the company's shops where there is abundant track room in order to clear the tracks, with a penciled note on the back from P.G.T. Beauregard supporting this request.
