Strong Union soldier's 4pp. letter written by Theodore F. Vaill who enlisted on 8/13/1862 as a Private into "A" Co. CT 2nd Heavy Artillery and was Mustered Out on 8/18/1865 at Fort Ethan Allen, DC. Vaill was wounded 3/25/1865 Petersburg, VA. The entire first page is taken with a hand tinted, split topographical Map. The top panel "View of Fortifications Around Washington" and the bottom panel, "Map of Virginia Between Washington and Manassas Junction". The letter is datelined Camp near Alexandria, Oct. 11, 1862. In part, "Our camp is laid out very much like Camp Dutton except we have twice the tents with five men in each". Theodore provides a small sketch of five named soldiers laying side-by-side in a tent. ... "We are doing picket & patrol duty6 in Alexandria at present. It takes about 400 of us each day ... Nothing but tents, tents tents for miles. It is said that there are 100,000 Union soldiers within 12 miles ...
