A Pair Of Sword Documents issued to Oscar D. McMillan, who mustered into "C" Co. MD 1st PHB Cavalry on 11/27/1861 and was POW by Mosby's command 9/2/1862 Leesburg, VA. He was Mustered Out on 6/28/1865 at Harper's Ferry, W. The first document is a copy of a Speech Delivered by Lt Colonel R(oger) E. Cook. In part, "I am authorized by the members of Co. C to tender you this sword as a manifestation of their esteem and regards for you as an officer and companion in arms. ... The zeal with which you devote yourself and energies to accomplish of the great results attained ... The patriotic use of this instrument of War ... we wish to leave you with a memorial of the past, a symbol of the service so cheerfully rendered ... May we hope that it shall never again be unsheathed to spill fraternal blood". ... plus, the document, also a copy of a speech, this speech by Oscar D. McMillan. In part, "Fellow Soldiers of Co. C. Your kindness truly surprises me, and as you know I'm no orator... All I can do is offer you my sincere and heartfelt thanks for this magnificent gift and this hour shall ever be remembered as the sweetest of my life. I notice engraved upon the plate - Semper Paratus. Allow me to assure you that it shall always be ready when the Flag of our nation shall be insulted. ..." It comes with original cover addressed to Oscar D. McMillan.
