Early Gettysburg campaign letter written by "Thomas" a member of the Third Division, 2nd Corps (the division that defended again Pickett's Charge at the Angle, Gettysburg), 4pp. 8vo., Falmouth, Va., June 12, 1863, reading, in small part: "- we hold ourselves in readiness to march at any moment - the balloon went up this morning - the rebels fired some shells at it - it came down soon but the shots did no damage except - giving the airman an idea it was best - or he might be brought down a little quick. The army is still moving this morning and the train of wagons were moving all night - the land is laid waste and the face of the Earth has the appearance of one vast desert - the train of ambulances and wagons still move on. There is no infantry passing our camp today - I never saw more trains moving than there has been since they bagman to move yesterday - the soldier knows very little what is going on until they are almost engaged in battle - Sundays we have preaching then we - have music by the band and singing - we have an excellent band - General French thinks a great deal of our band. Everyone praises our band who are judges of music - it cheers us very much for they play some splendid pieces - we shall again have peace. God will not forsake us nor leave us if we trust in him - Thomas." Light toning, else VG.
