Union 46th Massachusetts soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by a certain "Edward", New Bern, [N. C.], Feb. 2, 1863, concerning his regiment's movements during General Foster's North Carolina expedition and the regiment's sadness over the resignation of their much beloved commander, in small part: "- an expedition is just starting from Beaufort under Gen. Foster. Phil has gone as signal man on one of the boats. Our camp was moved - we are near the city under the protection of rifle pits & an abattis 300 feet wide on all sides where the city is not surround by the rivers. An attack is either expected or they are preparing to leave the place in charge of a smaller force - Col. [George] Bowler has gone home on a furlough on account of ill health & we hear that he has resigned. All are very sorry to hear this - he was liked by everyone - he took in the welfare & comfort of his men. He was humane [&] pleasant. Lieut. Col. [William] Shurtleff has had the command since our expedition & is liked quite well but does not fill the place of our Col. Today I went to the city to attend church - we had preaching by the chaplain of the 25th [Mass.] The congregation was mostly soldiers or those who are connected with the army & a striking contrast to what we see at the north - Edward."
