Union soldier's battle of Chickamauga letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Thomas R. Gregory, Co. B, 84th Indiana Vols. Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. 3, 1863, to his sister reporting on the decimation of his company at the battle of Chickamauga, in part: "- we have had a tough time for the last two weeks. Our regiment has been badly cut up. We commenced skirmishing on the 18th of September. On the 19th it got a little hotter. On the 20th we had the hardest fight that ever has been fought - we captured a rebel colonel. He says we was fighting the whole eastern army. This fighting was at Ringo [Ringgold], Georgia - we had to fall back to Chattanooga. I don't think we will have to give back any further. We have this place tolerably well fortified - George - was not in the fight. We went into the fight with 30 men. 19 of them was killed and wounded. Captain [John H.] Ellis was killed. Lieutenant [George C.] Hatfield was killed and several others. You don't no William Caster. [He was] wounded in the left breast. John Brandt was wounded in the hip [died of wounds on Jan. 12, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tenn.] and quite a number of others you don't know was wounded and killed - Thomas R. Gregory."
